Brisbane Budget: 2.4% Brisbane Rate Rise, $1b for Transport

BRISBANE RATEPAYERS will fork out $37 more next financial year in a council budget that includes more than $1 billion for transport infrastructure.
Mayor Graham Quirk handed down his seventh budget this morning, referring to it as one that prioritises Brisbane’s transportation needs and builds on the capital’s lifestyle.
“I make no apologies for making sure our city keeps pace in regards to infrastructure delivery, public transport delivery, taking action on traffic congestion and maintaining a superior lifestyle to anywhere else in Australia,” he said.
How budget is being spent:
- Smoother streets and congestions $1b
- Public transport $655m
- Clean and green $583m, garbage and food waste management, park maintenance, drainage
- Economic growth and new jobs $441m, to attract events, expand wi-fi, create business hotline
- Lifestyle and leisure $307m, including libraries, Mr Coot-tha and river-based leisure precinct aquatic centres
The focus of the $3.1 billion budget is a $1 billion investment in tackling road congestion and fixing city roads and a funding plan for the Brisbane Metro
Rates
Brisbane ratepayers will cop a 2.4 per cent rise, equating to about 72 cents a week.
Owner-occupied residential minimum rates will increase by $50 to $685.88.
