IN A RARE display of common sense, the Queensland will stop funding for its controversial Safe Schools program.

Negative “political ramifications” are stopping the Palaszczuk Government from funding the anti-bullying program Safe Schools once its federal funding runs out, the Queensland Teachers Union (QTU) says.

The controversial program which has been heavily criticised by some federal Coalition MPs is designed to help to educate students about sexual and gender diversity.

The Federal Government’s funding for the program will soon run out and Queensland’s allocation will last until the end of October.

The ABC can reveal that after October, Queensland schools will have to use funds from their own budget if they want their teachers to access the program’s training and professional development.

A spokesman for Queensland’s Education Minister said it was about supporting schools making their own decisions.

“Principals, in consultation with their community, are best placed to decide what’s appropriate for their schools,” he said.

  1. I do not see this as anything to do with common sense, but merely the Queensland government waking up that they are in dire straits and hoping this might buy them some votes.
