FIVE PEOPLE have died and a man is fighting for his life after a series of crashes across south-east Queensland on the final day of the winter school holidays.

A 57-year-old woman was pronounced dead at Tallai, at the Gold Coast, after the car she was a passenger in veered off The Panorama and collided with a tree about 8pm on Sunday evening.

The driver of the car was rushed to Gold Coast University Hospital in a critical condition.

The Forensic Crash Unit was investigating and The Panorama was closed for several hours overnight.

About 4pm on Sunday, emergency services were called to a car on fire west of Toowoomba.

Fire crews battled the blaze at Wallumbilla North and found two people dead inside the car.

Police said it appeared the car had veered off the road and hit a tree before the fire started.

Earlier on Sunday morning a cyclist died after a collision with a car on Mount Nebo Road about 7.30am.

Also on Sunday morning, about 9am, an 18-year-old man died in a car crash in Toowoomba.
