Queensland Budget 2017-18: Winners and Losers

SICK & TIRED: The Labor government will go on a “massive infrastructure spend”, including fully funding Cross River Rail and sending Malcolm Turnbull the bill.

Winners

  • South-east Queenslanders will receive the benefits of Brisbane’s first underground rail project, the $5.4 billion Cross River Rail project.
  • Inner-city families with school age children will reap the benefits of two new schools at Fortitude Valley and West End
  • Ipswich residents will see a $13 million upgrade of the Bundamba Turf Club
  • First home buyers will be able to apply for the $20,000 grant, which has been extended to December 31, 2017.
  • Queensland households can look forward to $770 million going towards reducing household electricity prices

Losers

  • Queensland motorists will continue to pay above inflation for vehicle registration for another two years.
  • Sunshine Coast has received no money for its $780 million Beerburrum to Nambour rail project from the 2017-18 budget.
  • Foreign investors will be stung with a 1.5 per cent land tax if the value of their taxable land is $350,000 or higher.
  • The unemployment rate is set to stay about six per cent for the next financial year
